Is your core strength trash: Pilates core-building from a tiny house to a power house!

Many Americans have poor strength in their foundation or core muscles. You will see people pumping out boring sit-ups and plank reps in most gyms. Have you ever tried Pilates?  A massive 11 million people participated in Pilates training in the U.S. in 2023, an increase of 15 percent from 2022.What the heck is Pilates? Pilates is a physical fitness system developed back in the day by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It's designed to take your flexibility, strength, and overall body awareness to another level. Pilates exercises focus on building your middle, also known as core strength. It also includes proper alignment, posture, and breathing techniques. The exercises can be performed on a mat or using specialized equipment such as a reformer. Pilates is known for its laser focus on controlled movements and precise form, with the goal of developing a strong, balanced body and promoting mental power.

It's popular for people of all ages and fitness levels, and it's often used in rehabilitation settings as well as for general fitness. The core muscles include those in the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks. Strengthening these muscles can improve posture, balance, and overall body control, while also reducing the risk of injury. By regularly practicing Pilates, individuals can develop a strong and stable core, which can benefit them in various activities, sports, and everyday movements. Additionally, a strong core is often associated with better overall fitness and a reduced likelihood of experiencing back pain or other musculoskeletal issues. There are numerous Pilates exercises designed specifically to target and improve core strength. The following are two popular exercises used in Pilates.

Front Support (resembles a plank): Begin in a push-up position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your body in a straight line from head to heels. Engage your core muscles to maintain this alignment, keeping your abdominals pulled in and avoiding sagging or lifting of the hips.

Side Stretch (resembles a side plank): Begin in aside-lying position with your bottom elbow directly under your shoulder and your legs extended out straight. Lift your hips off the mat, creating a straight line from head to heels. Engage your core to maintain stability, holding the position for a set amount of time before switching sides.

These are just a few examples of Pilates exercises that can help improve core strength.
